New career opportunities for Coding/Compliance personnel. Whether you're a new Procedural Coder or one who has been certified for years, you have undoubtedly noticed that the ranks of coders has been growing rapidly while the pay scale has been slowly eroding. More and more coders are finding themselves relegated to "coding pools" and given daily quotas to fill. If you're comfortable in this situation, that's great, but if you would like to rise above the pools and quotas where do you go from here? Many organizations recognize MCS-P certification as a skill-set which will keep their personnel on the cutting edge of the industry and will add a new source of knowledge for their physicians and management. Since the OIG, in 2000, recommended the creation of Compliance Programs and Compliance Positions in all medical practices, there has been a steady increase in demand for personnel with focused education in Procedural Coding and Regulatory Compliance issues. These new positions are available now in all parts of the country and represent a growing wave as Medical Practices attempt to comply with OIG recommendations. Where do you locate and apply for these new positions? The easiest way is online through job search engines such as monster.com and careerbuilder.com and others. You can search these sites for: "coding compliance", "medical compliance", "regulatory compliance" , "compliance auditor" and other combinations of key words. Another way out of the "pools and quota" quagmire is through consulting. The lack of trained personnel means that there is also a demand for specialists to consult with physician practices in creating and implementing Compliance Programs. Many have found this avenue to be very rewarding and has allowed work from home and flexable hours. What can dual certification do for your career? Perhaps more that you realize. It is certainly worth the effort to find out about these new positions and determine if they fit you career goals. Copyright
